Being dean changes you.

The role comes with no shortage of expectations.

Your faculty may need one version of you. Senior administration may expect another. Students, donors, partners and colleagues each bring their own hopes and demands. Meanwhile, financial pressure, political uncertainty, changing technology and institutional complexity keep reshaping what the job requires.

Somewhere inside all of that is a more important question:

What kind of dean do you want to be?

Not simply what do you need to accomplish.

Who do you need to become — and what choices will help you lead with the integrity, courage and impact this moment requires?

The Royal Roads Dean Retreat is a small, highly participatory gathering designed to give you the space, frameworks and peer community to answer those questions for yourself.

This is not a conference

There are no crowded ballrooms. No parade of keynote speakers. No expectation that you perform expertise for one another.

Instead, up to 15 deans will spend several days thinking, talking, working and connecting together.

You'll have space to step outside the urgency of your institution and examine your leadership from a different vantage point — alongside peers who understand the peculiar challenges, contradictions and possibilities of the dean's role.

There will be structured work.

There will be unstructured conversation.

There will be practical frameworks you can use when you return home.

And there will be time to think.

Throughout the retreat, we'll explore questions such as:

IDENTITY
What has the role of dean asked you to become? What parts of that identity have you chosen — and what parts have simply accumulated?

AGENCY
Where do you have more room to act than it sometimes feels like you do? What is yours to influence, interrupt, protect or create?

INTEGRITY
What does leading in a way that is authentically yours look like when competing expectations are pulling you in different directions?

IMPACT
Where can your leadership make the greatest difference now — for your people, your institution and the communities you serve?

PRACTICE
What simple frameworks, commitments and leadership practices can help you stay rooted when the work gets difficult?
